Curriculum Overview

Rightstart Math is a Montessori-based math program for elementary and middle school age children. It uses games and an abacus to teach in a method that is both kinesthetic and visual.

The manipulatives are an extra cost that can add up, but they will be used for many years and add significant value to the program.

It can only really be used in a cooperative setting if all children are using the same curriculum for the same year. However, the games are a useful enrichment tool that can cover multiple years for all styles of learning.

Pros:

> Excels at teaching concepts for math
> Very hands-on which encourages focus for kinesthetic learners
> Includes excellent selection of games that are fun even if they weren’t meant to teach mathematical concepts
> Easy to follow teacher instructions (because of different method of teaching; I recommend practicing lessons until you’re used to it)
> Open-and-go to a degree, except manipulative preparation
> Not a lot of worksheet work; focus is on the concepts

Cons:

> Expensive at the beginning, best to buy multiple years manipulatives at the beginning which can raise the price
> Books are not visually appealing, look like college textbooks which can make it hard for children to focus
> Despite being open-and-go, it can take some work to be familiar with the teaching style for parents/tutors
> The games instructions are often over-complicated, even though they are fun… just like the board game Catan
> You have to spend time to organize the manipulatives if you don’t want to go crazy during the lesson
> The beginning of the books has a lot of review material; usually we skip it
> Can be teacher intensive
> Not a lot of worksheet work to ensure the concepts are grasped
> Lessons can be long; they are easy to split however
> Manipulatives cards are incredibly glossy and slick which makes it a pain to shuffle during game sessions
