Curriculum Overview

Torchlight Level K is a geography based, secular curriculum for lower primary school. The basis of level-K is exposure to different world cultures an developing a love for reading. It includes many literature suggestions and many additional activities.

There are many suggestions for for math, science and literature though it much be purchased separately. The included Science is very weak, Blossom and Root is a great alternative. In addition, you may purchase extra books if you like, but they aren’t needed.

The material in torchlight can last longer than anticipated. It isn’t unusual for children to spend 1.5 to 2 years on this single year curriculum.

Pros:

> Open-ended, flexible, ease to make “your own” – we added passports for visiting countries, post cards and a coin collection among other things
> Great book selection (and movies)
> You can use it for a range of grades; easy to scale up or down
> You can do as much or as little as you wish
> It will be enjoyable to work alongside your kids
> Modern literature that deals with difficult topics such as discrimination or other subjects in a sensitive way
> It is possible to build the program with a very reasonable cost

Cons:

> More like a list of activities and books than a structured curriculum (could be a con for some)
> Some regions are studied more in depth, while others are less complete; it is easy to find additional sources
> Abundance of material; some weeks can be overwhelming when it takes two weeks for each country/region
> If you don’t have a well-stocked library system, it can be pricey
> While it has great suggestions for other subjects, it doesn’t include those subjects
> Science selection included is very lean (Blossom and Root level 1 or 3 are great alternatives)
> Teacher intensive
> Some people don’t like “jumping around”
